What happens if two boulderers finish on the same points?

The tie is broken by count-back: whoever ranked higher in the previous round is placed ahead. If that does not separate them, the climber who took fewer attempts on the boulders they topped is ahead. After that it is fewer attempts to reach their zones.

How it works

  • First: "count-back to the General Ranking after the preceding round".
  • When there is none: count-back is not used if the preceding round had more than one starting group.
  • Second: fewer total attempts "on those boulders successfully completed".
  • Third: fewer total attempts "for the Zone points awarded".
  • Starting groups: a large qualification field may be split into two groups of similar strength on separate sets of boulders.
  • Split quota: the places in the next round are divided equally between the two groups.
  • Starting order: best seeded first in qualification, best ranked last in the semi-final and final.

The glossary has the boulder tie-break, the count-back entry, the starting group, the quota, the seeding entry and the starting order.

Tricky cases

Two finalists tie on points. One was first in the semi-final and the other fourth. Who wins?

The climber who was first in the semi-final, on count-back.

Two climbers tie in a qualification round, which has no earlier round. What is used?

Attempts on the boulders topped, then attempts to the zones.

The qualification was run in two groups. Can it be used for count-back in the semi-final?

No. A ranking from a round with multiple starting groups cannot be used for count-back.

Can two climbers share a medal?

The rules read give three tie-breaks and do not say what happens if all three fail.

Why the rule exists

Points already include attempts, so a tie on points is between climbers whose rounds were nearly alike. Looking back a round rewards the one who has been better across the whole event. The attempt counts come last because they are the finest measure available.
