How is moguls skiing scored?

B · Beginner · Moguls and aerials · 3 of 6
Checked 14 October 2026

A moguls run is scored on three parts: turns, worth 60 per cent; the two air jumps, worth 20 per cent; and speed, worth 20 per cent. The speed score compares the skier's time with a pace time set from the course length. Ties go to the better turns score, then the air score, then the faster time.

How it works

  • Turns: 60 per cent.
  • Air: 20 per cent, for the two jumps.
  • Speed: 20 per cent, up to 20.0 points.
  • Speed score: 48 minus 32 times the skier's time over the pace time.
  • Pace speed: 10.30 m a second for men, 9.00 for women.
  • Start: a ten-second warning, then "Competitor ready! 3, 2, 1, go!".
  • Ties: turns score, then air score without DD, then time.
  • Scores: truncated to two decimal places.

The glossary has the moguls, the turn score, the air score, the moguls speed score, the moguls turns judging and the air bumps.

Tricky cases

A skier matches the pace time exactly. What speed score do they get?

16.0, since 48 minus 32 is 16.

Can speed score more than 20?

No. The maximum is 20.0.

Two skiers are tied on everything. What then?

They share the rank, listed by World Cup standing.

Where do the poles go at the start?

In front of the start line, with the boots behind it until the signal.

Why the rule exists

Weighting turns most keeps moguls a test of skiing the bumps, not only jumping. A formula for speed rewards pace without letting it outweigh technique.
