Do skateboarders have to wear helmets in competition, and how old must they be?
Officials' detail · Safety and procedures · 1 of 1In park, every skater must wear a helmet. In street, only skaters under 18 must. Other protective gear is the skater's own choice. The minimum age is being raised in steps: 12 in 2026, 13 in 2027 and 14 from 2028, counted by the calendar year of birth.
How it works
- Park: "All park athletes, regardless of their age, must wear a helmet during practice and competition."
- Street: "Street athletes under the age of 18 must wear a helmet during practice and competition."
- Not wearing one: "may result in the athlete's disqualification at the discretion of the TD". TD is the technical delegate.
- Other gear: each athlete uses "the safety gear they deem necessary".
- The helmet: a one-piece hard shell covering the back of the skull, padding inside and a chin strap with a buckle.
- Standards: World Skate suggests helmets meeting one of several named safety standards, and leaves the choice to the athlete or guardian.
- Minimum age: 11 in 2025, 12 in 2026, 13 in 2027 and 14 from 2028 onward.
- By year of birth: eligibility goes by the calendar year in which the athlete was born, not the birthday.
- Junior events: for youth and development events the minimum is 12 from 2026 onward.
- Headphones: not recommended, and the technical delegate may require a skater to stop using them for safety.
- Concussion: athletes must read and acknowledge the World Skate concussion protocol.

Tricky cases
A 17-year-old street skater wants to skate without a helmet in the final. Is that allowed?
No. Street athletes under 18 must wear one in practice and competition.
A skater turns 14 in December 2028. Can they compete in January 2028?
Yes, by the wording: eligibility is determined by the year of birth and not the exact birth date.
Are knee pads compulsory in park?
No. Only the helmet is compulsory. Other safety gear is the athlete's choice.
Does the helmet rule apply during practice?
Yes. It applies in practice and in competition.
Why the rule exists
Park skaters fall from height onto concrete, often backwards, which is why helmets are universal there. Street culture has long skated without them, and the rule protects minors while leaving adults to choose. The rising age limit followed the appearance of medallists who were barely teenagers.
