How does the mixed team event work in trap?
I · Intermediate · Finals and ties · 4 of 4A mixed team is one man and one woman from the same nation. Each shoots 75 targets in qualification and the two scores are added. The top four teams go to a final, where teams are eliminated in turn. The man always shoots before the woman.
How it works
- The team: two members, one male and one female, from the same nation, in the same competition clothing.
- Qualification: each member shoots 75 targets in 3 rounds of 25, so 150 for the team. The two are squadded next to each other, the man firing first.
- Ranking: by the combined score.
- The final: the four highest-ranking teams. Ties for places 1 to 4 are decided by a shoot-off.
- Final format: all eight athletes shoot 10 targets each and the fourth team goes out. The three remaining teams shoot 5 more each, to 30 targets a team. The third team takes bronze. The last two shoot 5 more each, to 40 targets a team, for gold and silver.
- One shot: finalists shoot one shot only at each target.
- Ties in the final: up to the bronze medal, the team with the lower start number wins. A tie for gold is shot off at once, with both members taking part.
- Coaching timeout: in the final each team's coach may ask for one timeout of up to 30 seconds.
- Entries: a nation may enter at most two mixed teams in one event.
Tricky cases
Can two teams from the same nation both reach the final?
Yes. A nation may enter two mixed teams, and nothing in the final rules bars both. In qualification they are not put in the same squad.
Can the woman shoot first if the team prefers?
No. The man always shoots first, followed by the woman.
Can a team change one of its members during the championship?
Yes, for another athlete already registered in the championship, not later than 12:00 two days before the day of the mixed team competition.
Why the rule exists
The event puts men and women on the same line for the same medal, with equal weight on both scores. The rule book lists a mixed team event in either trap or skeet among the Olympic events.
