How does the mixed team event work?

A mixed team is one man and one woman from the same nation, shooting 10 m air pistol. In qualification each fires 30 shots in 40 minutes and the two scores are added. The four best teams go to a final of up to 24 shots each, where the lowest team drops out in stages.

How it works

  • The team: "Two (2) Athletes from the same nation (1 male and 1 female)." A nation may enter at most two teams.
  • Qualification: each partner fires 30 match shots, 60 for the team, in 40 minutes. "Each athlete fires independently of their partner."
  • Side by side: partners shoot on neighbouring firing points with the woman on the left. Two teams from one nation are not placed next to each other.
  • Qualification scoring: full rings for air pistol.
  • To the final: the four top-ranked teams.
  • The final: every athlete fires three series of five shots, 250 seconds a series, then single shots on command with 50 seconds each. All final shots are scored in decimals.
  • Who goes out:
    • after 18 shots each, the lowest team is 4th;
    • after 21 shots each, the lowest team takes bronze;
    • after 24 shots each, silver and gold.
  • Ties: each member of the tied teams fires extra shots on command until the tie is broken.
  • Time out: each team may ask for one in the final by raising a hand after a round. The coach may then speak to the athletes on the line for up to 30 seconds. Other teams' coaches may use the same pause.
  • Malfunction: one allowable malfunction for each team in the final.
  • Reporting: all athletes 30 minutes before the start. Late reporting costs two points from the first competition series.

The mixed team event in the glossary is this one. Team events for three athletes of the same nation and gender also exist. They add the three qualification scores and have no final.

Tricky cases

Do the two partners take turns to shoot?

No. In qualification each shoots independently inside the same 40 minutes. In a series of the final either may fire first.

Can a coach talk to the team during the final?

Yes, once. A time out lasts at most 30 seconds from the moment the coach reaches the athletes.

A team reports 15 minutes before the start of the final. Can it shoot?

No. A team that reports later than 20 minutes before the start is not allowed to start and is ranked fourth.

Can the partners swap sides for the final?

Yes. The coach must tell the jury who will shoot on the left and who on the right before the protest time for the qualification scores ends.

Why the rule exists

Adding two scores means neither partner can carry the team, and a bad shot by one has to be made up by both. The final is shorter than an individual one because only four teams take part and each round produces two scores for a team.
