How the para taekwondo world ranking works

Checked 20 October 2026Valid for: the World Para Taekwondo Ranking under the WT World Para Taekwondo Ranking Bylaw as amended on 19 March 2025. Official source: worldtaekwondo.org. Not covered: the LA28 Paralympic qualification system; the 2022 version (saved for history); para poomsae.

World Taekwondo ranks para taekwondo athletes separately for each sport class (K41 and K44) and weight category (five for men, five for women). Points come from results at World Taekwondo events:

Points = points for your place × the event's grade.

PlaceBase points (grade 1)
1st10
2nd6
3rd (both bronze medallists)3.6
5th2.16
9th1.51

The grade multiplies these: the Paralympic Games is grade 20 (200 points for gold), the World Championships grade 14 (140), the Grand Prix Final grade 10, Grand Prix events grade 6; the Asian Para Games and continental championships grade 4 (40 for gold).

Points last four years, losing 25% of their value each year.

Points by place

1st gets 10 × grade. 2nd gets 60% of 1st, 3rd 60% of 2nd, the next place (5th in a knockout) 60% of 3rd, and every place after that 70% of the one above. Points are rounded to two decimals. An athlete must fight at least one match to score.

At the Paralympic Games (with repechage) the places are 1, 2, 3 (two), 5 (two), 7 (two), 9 and 13, worth 200, 120, 72, 43.20, 30.24, 21.17 and 14.82. At regional para games such as the Asian Para Games (G4, with repechage): 40, 24, 14.40, 8.64, 6.05 and 4.23.

At a Paralympic qualification tournament there is no bronze match, so the 4th-placed athlete gets 3rd-place points.

A tournament needs at least three countries, and a category at least three athletes from two countries, for results to count.

How long points last

Points count for four full years and lose 25% of their original value at the end of each year (at the end of the month in which they were won). The ranking is updated at the start of each month.

Two rankings

  • World Para Taekwondo Ranking: all points.
  • Paralympic Ranking: the same, without the points from the last Paralympic Games, so one Games does not decide the next. It is used for Paralympic qualification and seeding. A similar regional version leaves out the last regional games.

Changing class or weight

  • A change of sport class carries 75% of the points across (in the same weight); a move up after first appearance carries half; intentional misrepresentation wipes all points.
  • Athletes declare a weight category each year (1 to 25 January). Points can move to the category directly above or below.

A worked example

Made up to show the arithmetic. An Indian K44 athlete wins bronze at the Asian Para Games (G4: 14.40) and silver at a G2 tournament (12.00) this year. Two years ago they won a G6 Grand Prix bronze (21.60), now worth 50% (10.80). Ranking total: 14.40 + 12.00 + 10.80 = 37.20.

Where the document disagrees with itself

  • 3.6 says points are "rounded up", but the chart rounds normally and some values do not match the stated percentages (for example G14 9th place: 140 × 0.1512 = 21.17, but the chart shows 21.14; G6 9th: 9.07, chart 9.06).
  • The amendment dates list 16 November 2021 before 20 April 2021.
