Can different para-cycling classes race together?
I · Intermediate · Racing · 5 of 6The UCI may start several classes together, each group at least two minutes apart. Within a combined start riders may draft each other; otherwise taking pace from another class disqualifies. Organisers may mix classes or genders to make a viable event, except at the Paralympics and world championships. In factored events, standard factors adjust each class's times.
How it works
- Combined start: several classes as one group.
- Gap: at least two minutes between groups.
- Drafting: allowed between classes in a combined start.
- Otherwise: pacing from another class disqualifies.
- Mixing: organisers may mix to make an event.
- Not at: Paralympics and world championships.
- Factored event: standard performance factors applied.
- Factor table: on the UCI website.
The glossary has the combined start, the factored event, the individual pursuit (para-cycling), the scratch race (para-cycling), the division and the sport class code.
Tricky cases
A rider drafts a rider from another class in an ordinary race. Result?
Disqualification.
Can organisers combine men and women?
Yes, outside the Paralympics and world championships.
Where are the factors published?
On the UCI website.
Do combined classes get one podium?
Not in the scratch race, where each class has its own ceremony.
Why the rule exists
Some classes have too few riders for their own race. Factors let riders of different classes be compared fairly.
