How a para cross-country race works
- Para cross-country skiing is Nordic racing for athletes with a physical or vision impairment. Athletes race in three categories: vision impaired, standing and sitting, where skiers use a sit-ski on two skis.
- The most vision-impaired skiers race with a guide, who leads by voice or radio without touching them.
- Each class has a percentage. A skier's real time multiplied by it gives the calculated time, so different classes can race each other fairly.
- In an interval-start race skiers leave every 30 seconds and the lowest calculated time wins. Sprints start with a qualification, then heats where the first across the line wins.
How long
The Paralympic interval-start race is 10 km.
