How a match works, in a minute
How a para biathlon race works
- Para biathlon combines cross-country skiing with shooting an air rifle at five targets 10 m away.
- Athletes race as vision impaired, standing or sitting. Vision impaired athletes use an electronic rifle that turns their aim into a tone in their earphones.
- Each missed target costs a penalty loop, skied straight after the shooting, or added time in the individual.
- A percentage for each athlete's class turns their skiing time into a calculated time, so all classes race together. The lowest time wins.
How long
The sprint is 7.5 km with two shooting bouts; the individual is 12.5 km with four.
