What happens when a fighter is knocked down in Muay Thai?
I · Intermediate · Scoring and results · 2 of 4A knockdown is when a strike puts an athlete on the floor with difficulty rising, hanging on the ropes or out of them, or leaves them dazed. The referee calls "Yoot" and counts in Thai; the fight cannot restart before eight. At ten it is a knockout. The opponent waits in a neutral corner.
How it works
- Knockdown: floored and slow to rise, on or through the ropes or dazed.
- Down: on the floor without being struck; counted only if slow to rise.
- Count: in Thai, one second apart, from "Nueng" (1) to "Sib" (10).
- Eight count: no restart before "Baed" (8).
- Ten: a knockout.
- Opponent: to the neutral corner; the count pauses if they do not go.
- End of round: the count goes on past the bell.
- Out of the ring: 20 seconds to get back in unaided.
The glossary has the knockdown (Muay Thai), the mandatory eight count, the neutral corner, the knockout (Muay Thai), the athlete outside the ring and the referee commands (Muay Thai).
Tricky cases
A fighter falls again without being hit after the count. What then?
The referee goes on counting from eight.
Both fighters are knocked down together. Who wins?
If both are down at eight, the fight is decided on points so far.
Does a knockdown score points?
No. Judges note "KD" but add or take nothing.
A fighter is helped back through the ropes by a second. Penalty?
Yes. The count stops and the offender is warned.
Why the rule exists
A compulsory eight count gives a hurt athlete time to recover and the referee time to judge. Sending the opponent away prevents a late strike.
