How a match works, in a minute
How mallakhamb is scored
- Mallakhamb is an Indian sport in which athletes perform holds, climbs, catches and drops on a wooden pole or a cotton rope.
- Each performance is a set: either ten prescribed exercises in a fixed order, or the athlete's own optional set.
- An optional set is marked out of 10: difficulty 3.40, combination 1.60 and execution 5.00. Judges deduct for faults such as bent knees, touching the ground or losing balance.
- A chief judge and four judges score each set. The highest and lowest of the four are dropped and the middle two averaged.
How long
An optional set lasts 60 to 90 seconds, from leaving the ground to landing. The compulsory set must be done within 90 seconds.
