How a match works, in a minute
How a lawn bowls game works
- Players take turns to roll bowls along a flat green towards a small ball, the jack, which is rolled out first at the start of each end.
- The bowls are shaped so they curve as they slow, which is called the bias.
- When all the bowls of an end are played, each bowl nearer the jack than the other side's nearest scores one shot.
- Bowls is played as singles, pairs, triples or fours. A game is won on the higher total of shots, ends or sets, as the competition sets.
How long
Games are a set number of ends or shots. In sets play a game is two sets of nine ends, with a three-end tie-breaker if needed.
