How does play start and restart in lacrosse sixes?

Each quarter starts with a draw at the centre: two players contest the ball between their sticks while everyone else waits outside a 5-metre circle. There is no draw after a goal. The goalkeeper who was beaten takes the ball out of the net and play restarts from the crease within five seconds.

How it works

  • When: a draw starts each quarter and each overtime period.
  • The circle: all players except the two taking the draw stay outside the 5 m circle until the whistle.
  • Women's draw: standing, sticks held back to back above hip level with the ball between them. The ball must go higher than both players' heads.
  • Men's draw: crouched, sticks and gloves on the ground along the line with the ball between the heads.
  • "Set": after that word both players must be still until the whistle.
  • Hands off: nobody may touch the two players while the ball is still between their sticks.
  • After a goal: the goalkeeper has five seconds to take the ball from the goal and have it ready.
  • After a stoppage in the offensive zone: the restart is 2 m inside the nearest boundary line.
  • In the defensive zone: at the spot where the ball was.
  • Three metres: opponents must be at least 3 m from the player with the ball at a restart.
  • After a time penalty: the non-offending team starts on the penalty dot in its offensive zone.
  • Alternate possession: when officials cannot tell whose ball it is, the teams take turns.

The glossary has the center draw, the draw positions, the restart, alternate possession, the penalty dot and the goalkeeper.

Tricky cases

A team scores. Does it get a chance to win the ball back at a draw?

No. The team that conceded restarts through its goalkeeper.

The goalkeeper takes eight seconds to fetch the ball from the net. What happens?

The ball is awarded to the other team. The goalkeeper must retrieve and possess it within five seconds.

A quarter ends while one team has an extra player because of a penalty. Does the next quarter start with a draw?

No. The team that had the ball keeps it and restarts in the same relative position.

Both players draw illegally twice in a row. Who gets the ball?

It is awarded by alternate possession after the second failed draw.

Why the rule exists

A draw after every goal would stop the game twenty or thirty times. Handing the ball to the goalkeeper keeps play moving and gives the team that conceded the next attack. Quick restarts in general are an instruction to the officials, who are told to resume play fast and not be exact about the spot.
