How long is a men's lacrosse game?

Four quarters of 15 minutes, with two minutes between the first and second and the third and fourth, and ten minutes at half-time. A tied game goes to four-minute periods of sudden-victory overtime: the first goal wins. Each team has two 90-second timeouts per half and none in overtime.

How it works

  • The game: "4 periods of 15 minutes duration each".
  • Intervals: 2 minutes between the first and second quarters and the third and fourth, and 10 minutes at half-time.
  • Ends: the teams change ends at the end of each quarter.
  • The clock stops: after a goal and for time-serving penalties. It also stops whenever the ball is dead in the last 30 seconds of the first three quarters, the last two minutes of the fourth and all of overtime.
  • Overtime: after a 2-minute break, "4-minute periods of Sudden Victory overtime".
  • First goal wins: "The game ends upon the scoring of the first goal, thus deciding the winner."
  • A new toss: the visiting captain calls the toss for ends before overtime.
  • Each period starts: with a face-off at the centre, unless a team with an extra player had the ball when the previous period ended.
  • Timeouts: 90 seconds each, two per half, none in sudden-victory overtime.
  • Who may call one: a coach, the captain or the player with the ball, when the ball is dead or the team has the ball in its attacking half.
  • Injury: play stops at once for a serious injury or bleeding. Otherwise the official waits, as in a slow whistle.

The glossary has the quarter, the overtime entry, the game clock, the timeout and the injury timeout.

Tricky cases

A team is one goal down with a minute left and the ball goes out of bounds. Does the clock keep running?

No. In the last two minutes of the fourth quarter the clock stops whenever the ball is dead.

Can a team call a timeout in overtime?

No. No timeouts are allowed in a sudden-victory overtime period.

A defender wants a timeout while the other team is attacking. Can the defending team call one?

Not while the ball is live. A team may ask for one only when the ball is dead or when it has the ball in its own attacking half.

What if overtime is scoreless?

Another 4-minute period follows, after a 2-minute break and a change of ends, until a goal is scored.

Why the rule exists

Most of the game runs on a clock that keeps going, which keeps a match to a set length. Stopping it at every dead ball near the end means a team that is behind does not lose its last chance to time-wasting.
