How a match works, in a minute

How a kabaddi match works

  1. Two teams of seven, each in its own half of the court, take turns to attack.
  2. In a raid, one player crosses into the other half, chanting "kabaddi" without a break, tries to touch defenders and must get home within 30 seconds.
  3. Every defender touched is out if the raider gets home, and the raider's team scores a point for each. If the defenders hold the raider so that they cannot get home, the raider is out and the defence scores.
  4. Each time a team puts an opponent out, one of its own out players comes back: the revival.
  5. Put out the whole other team and you score an all out, worth two extra points.

Reading the score

Points are added as they come, one for each player put out, plus bonus and technical points. The team with more points at the end wins.

How long

A men's match is 40 minutes, two halves of 20 with a five-minute break. Women, junior girls and sub-juniors play two halves of 15.
