How do variety and wrong attacks affect a duo score?
I · Intermediate · Judging · 2 of 2Variety is marked by the video referee, out of 2 for throws and out of 2 for closing techniques. Different techniques in every attack score 2, the same one twice scores 1 and three times or more scores 0. A pair that performs the wrong attack gets 0 for the attack part of that defence.
How it works
- Variety in throws: 2 for a different technique in every attack, 1 if one is used twice, 0 if one is used three or more times.
- Variety in closings: the same scale.
- A variation: counts as a different throw.
- The closing that counts: the last technique. An arm lock followed by a strike counts as a strike.
- Target: for closings, the target does not matter.
- Wrong attack: an attack with the wrong number, shown by mistake, scores 0 in part 1.
- Who signals it: the video referee in the software, or the mat referee before the jury scores.
- On the scoreboard: a red flag, where the system allows.
The glossary has the variety, the wrong attack, the duo scoring, the series A, B and C, the hantei and jury and the duo penalty.
Tricky cases
A pair uses a hip throw in two attacks and a different throw in each of the others. What is its throw variety?
1 out of 2. The same technique in two attacks scores 1.
A defender finishes each attack with an arm lock and then a punch. Are those different closings?
No. Only the last technique counts for variety, so all of them count as punches.
Is a left-handed version of the same throw a different throw?
The rules say a variation counts as a different throw. Whether a mirror image is a variation is the video referee's call.
A pair shows attack B3 when B2 was due. Does the defence still score?
Yes, for the other parts. Only part 1, the attack, scores 0.
Why the rule exists
Without a variety mark a pair could use one excellent throw for every attack. The mark rewards range, which is what a self-defence system is meant to have. The wrong-attack rule protects the fixed order that makes the comparison fair.
