How each sport grades its tournaments

Checked 26 October 2026

Rules for How each sport grades its tournaments are being written.

badminton

Between the big championships, the BWF World Tour runs through the year, its tournaments graded by level. The higher the level, the more ranking points and prize money, so the best players go where the level is highest.

LevelIn 2026
World Tour FinalsThe season's last event, for the top eight in each event
Super 10004: the Malaysia Open, All England Open, Indonesia Open and China Open
Super 7506, among them the India Open in New Delhi
Super 5009
Super 30010, among them the Syed Modi International
Super 10010

The World Championships and the Olympic Games sit above the whole tour.

tennis

Every tournament on the men's and women's tours carries its points in its name. The four Grand Slams are worth the most.

ATP 250 and WTA 25025029 for men, 22 for women

Below them, Challenger and ITF events give from 175 points down to 15.

table-tennis

World Table Tennis (WTT) grades its series of events by the ranking points they give.

squash

The PSA Squash Tour grades its tournaments by prize money, and the ranking points follow.

LevelWinner's points
World Championships3,500
Diamond3,100
Platinum2,800
Gold1,800
Silver1,350
Bronze900
Copper500
Challenger60 to 300

The season ends with the PSA Squash Tour Finals for the top eight.

athletics

Outside the Olympics and the World Championships, the year's one-day meetings are graded. The Diamond League is the top series, ending in the Diamond League Final. Below it, the World Athletics Continental Tour has four levels: Gold, Silver, Bronze and Challenger, set by the quality of the field and the prize money; there are 11 Gold meetings in 2026.

The grade matters to athletes because the world rankings give more points for a place at a higher-graded meeting: a Diamond League meeting counts with the World Indoor Championships, and a Continental Tour Gold meeting with the Asian and Commonwealth Games.

golf

Men's golf has four majors: the Masters, the PGA Championship, the US Open and the Open Championship. In the world ranking a major gives its winner 100 points, the Players Championship 80, and no other event more than 80.
