What does best of three mean in esports?
B · Beginner · The basics · 2 of 3In head-to-head games a match is a series of games, or maps: best of three is won by the first team to two, best of five by the first to three. The VALORANT event uses four-team GSL groups, where two match wins go through and two losses go out, then a single-elimination bracket. Higher seeds get advantages.
How it works
- Match: two teams play a series of games.
- Best of three: first to two game wins.
- Best of five: first to three; used for the VALORANT grand final.
- GSL group: four teams; two wins in, two losses out.
- Single elimination: one match loss and out.
- Seeding: decides draws and gives higher seeds first choice.
- Overtime: VALORANT maps need a two-round margin.
- Forfeits: recorded at the minimum winning score.
The glossary has the match (esports), the best of three, the map (esports), the GSL group, the single elimination and the seeding (esports).
Tricky cases
Can teams from the same group meet early in the knockout?

A team forfeits a best of three. Recorded how?
2-0 to the opponent.
How is a higher seed decided in group round two?
By random draw.
Must a VALORANT map be won by two rounds?
Yes. Overtime is set to win by two.
Why the rule exists
A series of games rewards the more consistent team over a single lucky game. Seeding keeps the strongest teams apart until late.
