How a match works, in a minute
How a jumping round works
- A horse and rider jump a numbered course of obstacles in order, inside a set time allowed.
- Mistakes cost penalties: four for knocking a fence down, four for a first refusal, and one for each second over the time.
- A second refusal, a fall of horse or rider, or jumping the wrong course means elimination.
- The fewest penalties wins. Riders who are level, usually all those who went clear, ride a jump-off: a shorter course against the clock, where the fastest of the fewest penalties wins.
How long
The time allowed is worked out from each course's length and a set speed. Twice that is the time limit, and going past it means elimination.
