How old must a dressage horse and rider be, and who is allowed to ride the horse at a show?
A · Advanced · The competition · 3 of 3A rider can compete in senior international dressage from the year they turn 16. The horse must be at least eight years old at the higher levels and seven at the lowest. Once the stables open, nobody but the entered rider may school the horse, on pain of disqualification.
How it works
- Riders: "from the beginning of the year they reach the age of sixteen".
- Horses at the lowest senior level: at least seven years old.
- Horses at the higher senior levels: at least eight.
- Counting age: from 1 January of the year of birth, or 1 August for horses born in the southern hemisphere.
- Younger categories: horses of six or over for juniors, children and pony riders.
- Young horse classes: separate competitions for five, six and seven year olds.
- Who may ride: "No one other than the Athlete may ride the Horse" from the opening of the stables and throughout the event.
- What a groom may do: walk the horse on a long rein from the saddle, lead it and lunge it. A trainer may give help from the ground.
- Where: schooling only in the official training arenas, under the eyes of the stewards.
- Inspections: horses are presented at a horse inspection, under the veterinary regulations.
- Abuse: abuse of horses is dealt with under the general regulations. A performance against the horse's welfare means elimination.
- One championship level a year: a young rider may not ride both a young riders' championship and a senior championship in the same year.
The glossary has the horse, the athlete, the horse inspection, elimination and the judges.
Tricky cases
Can a trainer ride the horse for ten minutes in the warm-up to settle it?
No. Nobody other than the entered rider may ride it, except that a groom may walk it on a long rein.
Can a 15-year-old ride in a senior Grand Prix?
It depends on the birthday. A rider is eligible from the beginning of the year in which they turn 16, so a 15-year-old who turns 16 later that year may.
A horse was born in November. When does it turn eight for the rules?
On 1 January of the eighth year after its birth year. Ages are counted from 1 January of the year of birth in the northern hemisphere.
Can a rider take the horse for a quiet hack outside the showground?
No, not without permission. Horses may not leave the stables, the competition area or supervised areas unless an official or a vet authorises it.
Why the rule exists
Dressage judges what a rider has trained the horse to do, so a professional warming the horse up for an amateur would defeat the test. The age floors stop horses being pushed to the hardest movements before their bodies are ready, and supervised schooling is the main welfare check at a show.
