How does dragon boat racing work?
B · Beginner · Crews and boats · 1 of 3A dragon boat crew of up to 20 paddlers, a drummer and a steerer races a long, narrow boat down a straight lane. Crews race side by side in heats, then semi-finals or repechages, then finals. The first boat whose bow crosses the line with its full crew wins. Races run from 200 m to 2000 m.

Tricky cases
Must a crew race flat out in every round?
Yes. A crew that does not race its course as fast as possible faces disciplinary action and may be disqualified.
Does the dragon's head count at the finish?
Yes. When fitted, it is part of the boat.
Is there a gong beater?
In some traditional boats, yes, along with a flag catcher; IDBF championships use a drummer.
Who governs the sport?
The International Dragon Boat Federation (IDBF).
Why the rule exists
Large crews make dragon boat racing about timing and unity. Straight lanes and clear rules turn an old festival race into a fair sport.
