What happens if a defender leads out of turn in bridge?

Checked 14 October 2026

When a defender faces the opening lead out of turn, declarer may accept or refuse it, or spread their own hand and become dummy. A refused lead stays face up as a major penalty card. A card a defender exposes by accident is a penalty card: a single low card is minor; an honour or a card played on purpose is major.

How it works

  • Opening lead out of turn: declarer may accept or refuse it, or spread their hand and become dummy.
  • Refused: the card becomes a major penalty card.
  • Minor penalty card: a single low card exposed by accident.
  • Major penalty card: an honour, or a card exposed on purpose.
  • Minor rule: no lower card of that suit may be played before it, but an honour may.
  • Major rule: played at the first legal chance; partner may face lead limits.
  • Declarer's lead out of turn: either defender may accept it or require a retraction.
  • Trick 13: a lead out of turn must be retracted.

The glossary has the lead out of turn, the penalty card, the lead, the opening lead, the defender and the rectification.

Tricky cases

A defender drops the two of clubs. Is it a penalty card?

Yes, a minor one: a single card below honour rank exposed by accident.

Declarer could see dummy's cards before refusing a lead out of turn. What then?

Declarer must accept the lead.

A defender has two penalty cards. How are they treated?

Both become major, and declarer chooses which to play.

Does a declarer's exposed card become a penalty card?

No. Penalty cards apply to defenders only.

Why the rule exists

An exposed card gives partner information, so the rules make it a burden. Declarer's choices after a lead out of turn stop the defenders gaining from it.
