Can a team question a penalty in canoe slalom?
A · Advanced · The competition · 2 of 2Yes.
How it works
- Enquiry: one for each boat, each event and each competition at the top two levels, on judging and timing matters. It is free.
- The time limit: within five minutes of the posting of the athlete's checklist.
- When: at world championships and World Cups, only during the heats and the semi-final. At other competitions and in all team events, at any phase.
- The outcome: the chief judge reviews all the available information. The decision "becomes a matter of fact and cannot be protested further".
- Keeping it: if the enquiry changes the result, the federation does not lose its one enquiry.
- Protest: for an "obvious irregularity in the conduct of the competition", such as a changing water level, an object in the water, a moved gate or overtaking.
- Its time limits: notice within five minutes of the unofficial results and the written form within 20 minutes.
- The deposit: 75 euros, returned if the protest is upheld.
- Appeal to the jury: in writing with another 75 euros, within 20 minutes of the protest decision, when there appears to be a contradiction with the rules.
- Not open to appeal: matters of fact.

Tricky cases
Can a team enquire about a penalty given in the final at the world championships?
No. At that level enquiries are accepted only during the heats and the semi-final.
Can a team enquire about another country's paddler?
Yes, once in the whole competition.
After a failed enquiry, can the team protest the same penalty?
No. The chief judge's decision on an enquiry is a matter of fact and cannot be protested further.
Is the protest deposit lost if the team withdraws the protest?
Yes. The deposit is kept if the protest is not upheld or is withdrawn.
Why the rule exists
A gate judge sees a touch once, at speed, through spray. The enquiry gives a team one chance to have the video looked at. Limiting it to one, and closing it in the final at the top events, keeps results from hanging on reviews while the medals wait.
