How long does a breaker dance for, and who goes first?

B · Beginner · The battle · 2 of 3
Checked 14 October 2026

A set lasts 60 seconds at most. If a breaker goes over, the MC calls them to finish. No penalty is given for a set that is too long or too short. The breaker on the blue side may start within the first 10 seconds of the music. If they do not, the red side must.

How it works

  • The limit: "The maximum set time of each athlete is 60 seconds."
  • Going over: "the Head judge intervenes and the MC calls the athlete to finish".
  • No time penalty: "There are no penalties for performing too long or too short."
  • Ending a set: the breaker moves back to their own side. That tells the opponent and the DJ the set is over.
  • Who starts: the breaker on the blue side "may start her/his first set within 10 seconds after the start of the music". If not, the breaker on the red side "must start the battle".
  • Two-round battles: used in the round robin. The result is shown after the second round.
  • Best of three: "the first athlete to win two Rounds wins the battle".
  • Three-round battles: all three rounds are danced and the result is shown only at the end.
  • A level battle: in the knock-out phase, equal rounds and votes mean a deciding round.

The glossary has the set, the round and best of three.

Tricky cases

Is a breaker marked down for a 30-second set?

No. There is no penalty for a short set. The judges compare what was shown.

What happens if a breaker keeps dancing past 60 seconds?

The head judge intervenes and the MC calls the breaker to finish. The manual sets no deduction for it.

Can the blue side make the red side go first?

Yes. If the breaker on the blue side does not start within 10 seconds of the music, the breaker on the red side must start.

In a three-round battle, does the battle stop when one breaker has won two rounds?

No. In a three-round battle all three rounds are danced. Stopping at two wins is the best of three format.

Why the rule exists

Breaking is done at full effort, so a set is short by nature. The limit is a ceiling for the schedule and not a target, which is why there is no penalty either way: a breaker who has said what they wanted in 35 seconds loses nothing by stopping.
