How the breaking world ranking works

Checked 20 October 2026Valid for: the WDSF Breaking for Gold (BfG) World Ranking List under the WDSF Breaking Rules and Regulations Manual, version 4, January 2023, Appendix XI (pages 104 to 107), and the Operating Policy: WDSF Breaking Competition System passed on 7 May 2022. Official source: worlddancesport.org. Not covered: any change after January 2023.

The World DanceSport Federation (WDSF) ranks B-Boys and B-Girls separately. Each Breaking for Gold event gives ranking points by final place, at three levels:

LevelWinner gets
World Series (gold)1000
International Series (silver)400
Challenge Series (bronze)200

A breaker's ranking is the total of their best four results in the last 12 months. Points drop off 52 weeks after they are won.

The World Breaking Championships give no ranking points.

The three levels

LevelWho runs itEventsEntries per countryJudges
World SeriesWDSFUp to five a year, one per countryBest 3 per gender9 from 9 countries (Trivium system)
International SeriesWDSF-approvedUp to three per country a yearNo limitAt least 7 from 7 countries
Challenge SeriesNational federations, approved by WDSFNo limit; national or internationalNo limit5 from 5 countries

The Challenge Series is meant as a starting point for countries building a national ranking.

Who gets into a World Series event (from 1 January 2023)

  • The best-ranked athlete of each gender from each country on the world ranking list qualifies directly.
  • Countries with a WDSF-approved national ranking pick the next two from it.
  • Countries without one send the next two from the world ranking list, with WDSF's approval.
  • The ranking list used is the one on the 1st of the month before the event.

Updates and seeding

Results are uploaded within 24 hours of an event; WDSF calculates the points. The list is published on Mondays before 23:59 CET. At each event athletes are first ordered by the ranking list as of the last Monday before it (ties and unranked athletes are ordered by when they registered).

A worked example

Made up to show the arithmetic. An Indian B-Girl's results in the last 12 months: 9th at a World Series event (300), 2nd at an International Series event (300), 1st at a Challenge Series event (200), 5th at another International Series (160) and 17th at another World Series (200). Her best four: 300 + 300 + 200 + 200 = 1,000. The 160 does not count.

Where the documents disagree

  • The 2022 Operating Policy lists the World Championship as one of the World Series events but also says it gives no ranking points (1.2 and 2.1.11). The 2023 manual drops the World Championship from the World Series list.
  • The 2023 manual adds the 2022 and 2023 continental championships to the ranking list at World Series points (3.4); the 2022 policy does not.
  • The manual says the list is published "every Monday of each month", which could mean weekly or monthly.
