How a match works, in a minute
How a boxing bout works
Shown with amateur (Olympic-style) boxing under World Boxing's rules.
- Two boxers score with clean punches from the knuckle part of the glove to the front and sides of the head and body, above the belt.
- A bout is three rounds. Five judges score each round: 10 to the boxer who won it, and 9, 8 or 7 to the other, depending on the margin.
- A boxer knocked down gets a count that always goes to at least eight. One not fit to go on by ten has lost by knockout.
- If nobody is stopped, the judges' totals decide: a unanimous decision when all five pick the same winner, a split one when they do not. A bout cannot be drawn.
How long
Three rounds of three minutes for adults, with a minute's rest between them. Under-17s box two-minute rounds.
