How the boxing world ranking works
Why does a boxer's ranking drop on 1 January?
Because World Boxing's points lose value with time. On 1 January after a tournament, its points are cut by a quarter. A year later they are worth half, and a year after that nothing.
Boxers earn points by where they finish at seven kinds of tournament, from the Olympic Games down to the World Boxing Challenge. An Olympic gold is worth 2,000; a World Championships gold 1,500; a continental title 800; a World Boxing Cup win 150. Losing semi-finalists share third place, so both get bronze-medal points.
Only a boxer's four best tournaments count. The ranking is kept separately for men and women and for each weight, and it covers elite boxers only.
World Boxing may use it to seed its biggest tournaments: the World Championships, continental championships and games, and the World Boxing Cup Finals.
The one thing to remember: a boxing ranking is the four best results of the last three years, and each one shrinks every 1 January.
Which tournaments count
Olympic Games; World Boxing Championships; continental games (African, Asian, European, Pan American and Pacific); continental championships; World Boxing Cup Finals; World Boxing Cup; World Boxing Challenge.
The points
| Place | Olympic Games | World Championships | Continental games or championships | World Boxing Cup Finals | World Boxing Cup | World Boxing Challenge |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1st | 2,000 | 1,500 | 800 | 300 | 150 | 50 |
| 2nd | 1,300 | 1,000 | 500 | 200 | 100 | 30 |
| 3rd and 4th | 800 | 600 | 300 | 150 | 75 | 15 |
| 5th to 8th | 500 | 300 | 150 |
At the Cup Finals, Cup and Challenge, only the medallists score.
Four best, three years
A boxer's total is the sum of the four tournaments with the most points within the three-year window. The ranking began with the Paris 2024 Olympics.
Points then shrink on 1 January each year:
| Value | |
|---|---|
| The year of the tournament | 100 per cent |
| From 1 January of the next year | 75 per cent |
| From 1 January of the year after | 50 per cent |
| From 1 January of the third year | 0 |
World Boxing's own example: a 2025 World Championships gold (1,500) is worth 1,125 from 1 January 2026, 750 from 1 January 2027 and nothing from 1 January 2028.
Points stay with the boxer and the weight
Points belong to the boxer and to the weight they were won in. They cannot move to another boxer or another weight. The one exception: if World Boxing changes its weight categories, each boxer may move their points once, from a weight that changed to the weight they choose.
Who is ranked
Elite boxers only. A boxer with a current World Boxing suspension or sanction is left out, and a boxer with an anti-doping violation gets no points from the tournaments it affected.
Ties
The boxer with more points from the highest tier of tournament ranks higher; if still level, the next tier down, and so on.
A worked example
Made up to show the arithmetic. In 2027 a boxer wins bronze at the World Championships (600) and the Asian Championships title (800). In 2028 they win a World Boxing Cup (150) and reach the Olympic quarter-finals (500). On 1 January 2028 the two 2027 results drop to 75 per cent, so in 2028 the total is 450 + 600 + 150 + 500 = 1,700. On 1 January 2029 the 2027 results halve (300 + 400) and the 2028 ones drop to 75 per cent (112.5 + 375): 1,187.5.
