How to qualify in Biathlon

How biathletes qualify for the Biathlon World Championships

Checked 20 October 2026Valid for: the IBU World Championships, under the IBU Event and Competition Rules, version 2026 (September 2026), Article 12.6.1. Not covered: the personal qualification criteria an athlete must meet (Art. 1.5, in the same rules); the Junior World Championships; how the Nations Cup is scored (see the biathlon ranking page).

How many biathletes a country can send to the World Championships depends on its Nations Cup ranking (the countries' table from the previous season's World Cup). The table is the same for men and women:

Nations Cup rankMay registerMay start (individual, sprint)
1 to 584
6 to 1574
16 to 2553
26 to 3042
31 and below, or not rankedwild cards: 10 in all, at most 2 per country

The wild cards go to the 10 best-ranked athletes on the IBU qualifying points list from countries without a quota. Every athlete must also meet the IBU's personal qualification criteria.

For India, which is not in the Nations Cup top 30, the only route is a wild card: an Indian biathlete would need to be among those 10.

Extra starts

  • A country with more than four athletes in the current World Cup top 15 may start them all in the individual and sprint, up to five.
  • The previous World Championships' champions in the individual, sprint, pursuit and mass start may be entered on top of the quota; the sprint quota can then reach six.

Where the IBU's own news differs

An IBU news item (about the 2023 Championships) describes the top-15 rule as giving a right to enter any top-15 athlete; the 2026 rules limit it to countries with more than four athletes in the top 15.
