What are the backcourt rules in basketball?

I · Intermediate · Violations · 7 of 13
Checked 13 October 2026

A team that gains the ball in its backcourt has 8 seconds to get it into the frontcourt. Once it has the ball in the frontcourt, it may not take or pass it back over the centre line: that is a backcourt violation. The centre line is part of the backcourt.

How it works

The 8 seconds:

  • Start when a player in the backcourt gains control of a live ball.
  • The ball is in the frontcourt when it touches the frontcourt, or a player with both feet in it. For a dribbler, the ball and both feet must all be in the frontcourt.
  • The count carries on with the time left if the same team gets a throw-in in the backcourt after the ball went out, an injury to one of its players, a jump ball situation or a double foul.

Ball returned to the backcourt:

  • A team in control in its frontcourt may not be the last to touch the ball there and then the first to touch it in the backcourt.
  • Exception: a player who jumps from the frontcourt, gains new team control in the air and lands in the backcourt.
  • Penalty: the ball to the opponents for a throw-in in their frontcourt.

Tricky cases

A defender knocked the ball into the backcourt and the attacker fetched it. Is that a violation?

No. The attacking team was not the last to touch the ball in the frontcourt.

The dribbler has one foot over the centre line. Is the ball in the frontcourt?

No. During a dribble the ball and both feet must be in contact with the frontcourt.

A player intercepted a pass in mid-air and landed in the backcourt. Is that a violation?

No. That is the exception for a player who establishes new team control while airborne.

Why the rule exists

Together they stop a team using the whole court to keep the ball away. The attack has to come forward and stay forward.
