What may a thrower put on their hands?

Officials' detail · The throw · 1 of 3
Checked 14 October 2026

Hammer throwers are the only throwers allowed gloves. The gloves must be smooth on both sides, with the fingertips open apart from the thumb. A suitable substance may go on the gloves or hands. Fingers may be taped one by one but not together. Nothing may be sprayed or spread in the circle or on the shoes.

How it works

Not allowed:

  • Fingers taped together: "The taping of two or more fingers together." Tape on the hands and fingers may be continuous, provided no two fingers are bound so that they cannot move on their own. It should be shown to the chief judge before the event.
  • Devices: "any device of any kind, including weights attached to the body, which in any way provides assistance when making a trial".
  • Gloves: "The use of gloves except in the Hammer Throw." In the hammer the gloves must be smooth on the back and the front, and the tips of the glove fingers, other than the thumb, must be open.
  • The circle and the shoes: spraying or spreading any substance in the circle or on the shoes, and roughening the surface of the circle.
  • Body fluids: spitting on an implement, or putting body fluids on it in any other way.

Allowed:

  • On the hands: "a suitable substance on their hands only", or for a hammer thrower on the gloves.
  • Taping: tape on the hands and fingers that does not bind fingers together.
  • Easily removed: anything used on the hands, gloves or implements must come off the implement with a wet cloth and leave no residue.
  • Tape on a shoe: a note added in 2026 says tape on the outside of a throwing shoe is acceptable and should be shown to the chief judge first.

If the judges notice a breach they tell the athlete to put it right. If the athlete does not, the trial is a failure. A trial completed before the breach was noticed is also a failure. Serious cases may be dealt with as misconduct.

Tricky cases

Can a thrower tape two sore fingers together?

No. Each finger must be able to move on its own.

Can a hammer thrower wear a full glove with closed fingertips?

No. The tips of the glove fingers, other than the thumb, must be open.

Can a thrower wear a weighted wristband?

No. Weights attached to the body are on the banned list.

Can a hammer thrower put resin on the gloves?

Yes. A suitable substance may be used on the gloves, provided it wipes off the hammer with a wet cloth.

Why the rule exists

Grip is part of the skill, so the rule allows what keeps a hand dry and stops what would do the hand's work for it. Fingers taped together act as one stronger lever. The hammer is the exception on gloves because the wire handle cuts into bare fingers under the pull of the turns.
