- What is marathon swimming, and how is it won?Marathon swimming is the Olympic name for the 10 km race in open water swimming: a mass-start freestyle race in a river, lake, sea or channel.
- How does an open water race start?At the Olympic Games and other World Aquatics events the swimmers start together from a fixed platform, each in a position decided by random draw and each wearing an approved cap.
- What must a swimmer do to stay on the course?Swimmers must complete the whole course and respect every turn buoy and course boundary.
- How does an open water race finish?The last stretch is a funnel of buoys that narrows to a finish plate at least 5 m wide.
