Why do artistic swimmers not wear goggles?
Officials' detail · The routines · 1 of 2Because the rules do not permit them in routines. Goggles, accessory equipment and additional clothing are allowed only for medical reasons. Nose clips may be worn. Swimwear may represent the theme of the music but must be dignified, and theatrical make-up is not allowed.
How it works
- Goggles and extras: "The use of accessory equipment, goggles or additional clothing is not permitted unless required by medical reasons."
- Nose clips: "Nose clips or plugs may be worn."
- Jewellery: only small studs. Dangling jewellery and dangling items on headpieces or swimwear must come off before the event.
- Routine swimwear: it "may however represent character or theme of the music". It "must not give the effect of excessive nudity" and must be "dignified and appropriate for athletic competition".
- Make-up: "Theatrical make-up shall not be worn." Natural make-up that suits the athlete or the theme may be used.
- Men: swimwear "shall not extend above the navel nor below the upper thigh".
- No aids: nothing that helps speed, buoyancy or endurance. Tape on the body needs medical approval.
- Not in order: an athlete whose swimwear does not conform "will not be permitted to compete until in conformance".
- Figures: a black swimsuit and a white cap. Goggles may be worn in the figure session.

Tricky cases
Are nose clips compulsory?
No. They "may be worn". The rules leave the choice to the athlete.
Can a swimmer with an eye condition wear goggles in a routine?
Yes, if it is required for medical reasons.
Can a team wear costumes that match its music?
Yes. Swimwear may represent the character or theme of the music, within the limits on nudity and dignity.
The Referee decides a costume does not conform a few minutes before the start. Is the routine disqualified?
No, not for that alone. The athlete is not permitted to compete "until in conformance", so the costume must be put right first.
Why the rule exists
The face is part of the performance and goggles hide it. The limits on costume and make-up keep the session an athletic contest. The jewellery rule is a safety rule: swimmers work close together and something dangling can catch.
