What penalties are there in cross-country skiing?
I · Intermediate · Sanctions and officials · 7 of 7The jury picks a sanction by weighing the advantage gained, the harm to others and the effect on the result. Disqualification is for breaches with a plain effect on the result. Lesser sanctions include time penalties, a rank penalty behind the skier blocked, suspension in sprint heats and reprimands. A second written reprimand in a season disqualifies.
How it works
- Weighing: the advantage gained, harm to others, the effect on the result, the level, the skier's age and experience.
- Disqualification: for breaches with a clear effect on the result.
- Automatic DSQ: false pretences, endangering people or property, skiing two relay legs.
- Time penalties: false starts, relay exchange faults; 3 minutes instead of DSQ in some team or stage races.
- Rank penalty: for obstruction in mass starts, skiathlons and pursuits.
- Suspension: last in the heat in sprints; out of a bonus sprint in mass starts.
- Reprimands: written, for breaches with no clear gain; verbal, as a warning.
- Two written reprimands: in one season, an automatic disqualification.
The glossary has the sanctions (cross-country), the false start (cross-country), the relay, the sprint heats, the mass start and the passing.
Tricky cases
A skier blocks another but gains nothing. DSQ?
Probably not. Breaches with no clear gain usually bring a written reprimand.
Do written reprimands carry into the Olympics?
No. Season reprimands do not count at the Olympics and World Championships; those given there last until the season ends.
Can two jury members sanction a technique breach without video?
Yes, if they agree and one is the technical delegate.
Who is not permitted to start?
Skiers with illegal equipment, a covered bib or skis positive for fluorinated wax, and any who refuse a required medical check.
Why the rule exists
A scale of sanctions lets the jury match the penalty to the offence. Counting reprimands across a season stops repeat offenders from treating them as free.
