What are the passing rules in cross-country skiing?

I · Intermediate · During the race · 6 of 7
Checked 14 October 2026

No skier may obstruct another. In interval races, a skier being caught must give way when asked. In other races, the skier in front may choose the best line but must not block those behind, and a passer must not cut in. A pass is complete when the passer's body is ahead of the other skier's ski tips.

How it works

  • General rule: skiers must not obstruct other skiers.
  • Interval races: give way on first demand, even in two-track classic courses.
  • Skier in front: may choose the best line, but not abruptly change it to block.
  • Skier passing: must not start a pass without room to finish it.
  • Side by side: both must not obstruct each other's movements.
  • Pass complete: when the passer's body is ahead of the other's ski tips.
  • Corridors: skiers may change corridor if they keep to these rules.
  • Direction: always ski in the race direction, also when warming up.

The glossary has the passing, the sanctions (cross-country), the mass start, the interval start, the course and the sprint heats.

Tricky cases

In a mass start, a skier swerves across to block a challenger. Penalty?

Yes. The skier in front may choose a line but not change it abruptly to block.

A skier forces into a gap that is not there and both fall. Who is at fault?

The passer, who must not start a pass without room to complete it.

What can the jury give instead of disqualification for obstruction?

In mass starts, skiathlons and pursuits, a rank penalty: the offender is placed behind the skier they blocked.

Can coaches run alongside giving splits?

For no more than 30 m, and without obstructing anyone.

Why the rule exists

Skiers in front cannot see behind them, so they get the line, but not the right to block. A clear point when a pass ends tells both who has priority.
