Can cross-country skiers change skis during a race?

A · Advanced · During the race · 1 of 3
Checked 14 October 2026

Poles may be changed only if broken, and skis only if broken, in a pit box or in classic sprint finals with checked skis. Skiers change skis alone, outside the track. Waxing or cleaning ski bases during a race is banned, except that classic skiers may scrape off ice and add kick wax. Skis that fail the fluorinated-wax test may not start.

How it works

  • Poles: changed only if broken or damaged, or in a skiathlon pit box.
  • Skis: changed only if broken, at pit boxes or in classic sprint finals with tested skis.
  • Proof: a broken ski or binding must be shown to the jury afterwards.
  • No help: the skier changes alone, outside the track.
  • Pit boxes: one change at most in long races; one pair of skis per box.
  • Waxing: banned during the race; classic distance skiers may scrape and add kick wax.
  • Fluorinated wax: skis must pass the test; a positive test means no start.
  • Radios: two-way communication with coaches is banned in races.

The glossary has the equipment exchange, the pit box, the glide wax, the wax, the ski and the poles.

Tricky cases

A skier breaks a pole. Can a coach hand over a new one?

Yes. A broken pole may be replaced; in classic races both replacement poles must meet the length rule.

Can a teammate give a racer a ski?

Yes. Another competitor may hand over a ski, and take a replacement themselves.

A classic skier's grip wax wears off. Can they add more?

Yes, in classic distance races, by themselves.

Can a skier wear an earpiece to hear the coach?

No. Two-way radio between coaches and racers is banned, with an exception being tried in long popular races.

Why the rule exists

Limits on changes keep the race a test of the skier, not the service team. The fluorinated-wax ban protects health and the environment, and keeps budgets level.
