More about this tournament

How the rows were read
  • Built from the six championship tables of "List of World Chess Championships"; the nation is the flag the list shows for that year (Steinitz under the Austrian Empire in 1866, Austria-Hungary in 1886 and the United States from 1889). The 2021 runner-up's cell has no flag; the match article's infobox gives the Chess Federation of Russia.
  • The list's key is written into the score column: a tournament rather than a match, a drawn match in which the champion kept the title (1910, 1951, 1954, 1987 and 2004), the 1975 match that did not take place, and the 1984–85 match abandoned without a result. Tiebreak segments run on in the list's score cell; they are written "6–6, then 2½–1½". The 1834 La Bourdonnais–McDonnell series of six matches has its scores run together and is written as such.
