India and the Champions League
The Champions League is for clubs of UEFA's member associations; India is not one, so Indian clubs do not enter. Indian clubs play in the Asian club competitions.

History
How it began
Gabriel Hanot, editor of the French paper L'Équipe, proposed a continent-wide club tournament. The first European Cup, in 1955-56, had 16 teams (some invited). Its first match, on 4 September 1955, was a 3-3 draw between Sporting CP and Partizan.
How the format changed
The European Cup was a straight knockout for league champions. A round-robin group stage was added in 1991 and the competition took its present name in 1992; later it let several clubs from the same country enter. In the present format a league phase of 36 clubs, each playing eight opponents, comes before the knockout rounds and a one-match final.
Champions by era
Real Madrid won the first five finals (1956 to 1960). Ajax (1971 to 1973) and Bayern Munich (1974 to 1976) won three in a row. Spanish clubs have won 20 titles, English 15 and Italian 12.
Firsts and facts
- First final: Real Madrid 4-3 Reims, Parc des Princes, Paris, 13 June 1956.
- The only replayed final: 1974, Bayern Munich against Atlético Madrid.
- Biggest winning margin in a final: Paris Saint-Germain 5-0 Inter Milan, 2025. Most goals in a final: Real Madrid 7-3 Eintracht Frankfurt, 1960.
