History

How it began

Football was played at Paris 1900, and Great Britain, Canada and Great Britain again won the first three tournaments. There was no football at Los Angeles 1932.

Champions by era

Uruguay won in 1924 and 1928; teams from eastern Europe won every men's title from 1952 to 1980. Since 1996 the men's gold has gone to teams from Africa (Nigeria, Cameroon), South America (Argentina twice, Brazil twice), North America (Mexico) and Europe (Spain, 2024). The United States have won five of the eight women's tournaments.

India's story

India played four Olympic football tournaments in a row (1948 to 1960) and finished fourth at Melbourne 1956, its best Olympic result in the sport.
