More about this tournament

How it works

Nine teams in each league play each other over a season in mini-tournaments at the teams' home grounds; the team with most points at the end is champion and receives the FIH Hockey Pro League Trophy. The 2019 season ended with a Grand Final of the top four, decided by a final. The 2020-21 season was decided on percentage of points after matches were lost to COVID-19. The last-placed team is relegated and the Nations Cup winner promoted.

History

How it began

The FIH created the Pro League as a yearly league of the best national teams (men and women) and first played it in 2019. The first season ended with a Grand Final in the Netherlands: Australia's men and the Netherlands' women were the first champions.

How the format changed

After 2019 the Grand Final was dropped and the champion became the team on most points at the end of the season. COVID-19 cut the 2020-21 season short, and the title was decided on percentage of points. From 2024-25 the champions earn direct places at the World Cup and, for 2025-26, at the LA28 Olympic Games.

Champions by era

The Netherlands' women have won six of the seven seasons; Argentina took the other, in 2021-22. In the men's league the title has moved between the Netherlands (three), Belgium and Australia (two each). [rows]

India's story

India's men joined in 2020-21 and finished fourth, then third in 2021-22, their best; since 2023-24 they have finished in the lower half. India's women were third in 2021-22, were relegated after finishing ninth in 2024-25, and return in 2026-27.

Firsts and facts
  • First season: 2019; first champions Australia (men) and the Netherlands (women).
  • The 2019 women's final was the only Pro League title decided by a shoot-out.
  • The Netherlands men were the first to win the men's title twice (2021-22 and 2022-23).
  • In 2022-23 the Netherlands won both titles in one season, the first nation to do so.
