Hockey at the Commonwealth Games
Field hockey
Hockey joined the Commonwealth Games at Kuala Lumpur 1998, for men and women; Australia won both first titles.
Hockey is one of three "large team sports" (with rugby sevens and T20 cricket), of which every Games must hold at least two.

History
How it began
Hockey first came to the Commonwealth Games at Kuala Lumpur 1998, with eleven men's and twelve women's teams. It is no longer a fixed sport: under Commonwealth Sport's current rules the Games must hold at least two of hockey, rugby sevens and T20 cricket, and Glasgow 2026 does not include hockey.
Australia's men
Australia have won all seven men's titles, from 1998 to 2022. They conceded in only one of the seven finals, 5-2 over New Zealand in 2002.
Women's hockey
Australia won four of the first five titles; India won in 2002, 3-2 after extra time against England. New Zealand won in 2018 and England, at home, in 2022.
India's story
India's women are the only Indian hockey team to have won Commonwealth gold (2002); the men have reached three finals, all against Australia. Both teams won a medal at Birmingham 2022, the men silver and the women bronze after a shoot-out against New Zealand.
