The road to the Olympic Games
The Asian Games gold medallists, men and women, qualify directly for the next Olympic Games. The FIH stated this for Paris 2024 (Hangzhou 2022) and named the other routes: continental champions and the FIH Olympic Qualifiers, where the teams placed second to sixth (men) and second to fifth (women) at the Asian Games had a second chance. Both of India's 2026 golds were reported as direct places at Los Angeles 2028; the FIH's own qualification system for LA28 has not been read.

History
How it began
Men's hockey came to the Asian Games at Tokyo 1958, as a round robin of five teams that Pakistan won on goal difference ahead of India. It has been played at every Games since; India, Pakistan and Malaysia had played at all 16 editions up to 2018. Women's hockey joined at New Delhi 1982.
Pakistan and India
Pakistan won six of the first seven titles; India's only gold in that time came in 1966, 1-0 over Pakistan after extra time. India and Pakistan met in six finals between 1962 and 1982, after India had finished second to Pakistan in the 1958 round robin.
A wider field
From 1986 the title spread: South Korea won four times between 1986 and 2006, and Japan won their first in 2018. India won in 1998 and 2014 after shoot-outs. They won again in 2022 and 2026: the first time they had won two in a row.
Women's hockey
India won the first title in 1982, unbeaten. South Korea won the next four, China three in a row from 2002, and Japan their first in 2018. India's second gold came 44 years after the first, at Aichi-Nagoya 2026, 1-0 over the holders China.
