How does a wrestling tournament work?

A weight category is a knockout. A wrestler who loses is out, unless the opponent who beat them reaches the final: then they enter the repechage for bronze. Two bronze medals are awarded, one from each half of the bracket. A category normally runs over two days.

How it works

  • Direct elimination, on a bracket of 4, 8, 16, 32 and so on. If the entry is not one of those numbers, qualification bouts bring it down to one.
  • The draw is random and held no later than the day before. Seeded wrestlers are placed as far apart as possible.
  • Repechage: Every wrestler beaten by one of the two finalists goes into it. There are two groups, one for each finalist. Each starts with the wrestlers that finalist beat earliest and works up to the beaten semi-finalist. The winner of each group takes a bronze medal.
  • Day one: qualification and elimination rounds. Day two: repechage and finals. A category with fewer than 16 wrestlers can be run in one day.
  • Medals: gold, silver and two bronzes.
  • From 7th place down, wrestlers are ranked on classification points.

Small entries use the Nordic system:

  • Fewer than 6 wrestlers: one group, in which everyone wrestles everyone.
  • 6 or 7 wrestlers: two groups, then semi-finals, a gold-medal bout and a bronze-medal bout.
  • Only one bronze medal is awarded.

Tricky cases

Does every wrestler who loses get a second chance?

No. Only those who lost to one of the two finalists.

A wrestler lost in the first round to the eventual champion. Can they still win a medal?

Yes. They enter the repechage and can win bronze.

Why are there two bronze medals?

There are two repechage groups, one behind each finalist, and their winners do not meet.

Why the rule exists

A random draw can put the two best wrestlers together in the first round. The repechage gives a wrestler beaten by a finalist a route back to a medal, without the length of a full double-elimination event.
