How big is a wrestling mat?
Officials' detail · Competition, officials and the mat · 1 of 1The mat is a circle 9 metres across: a 7-metre central area with a 1-metre orange passivity zone round it. A protection area 1.5 metres wide lies outside the circle. One wrestler wears a red singlet and the other blue. The skin must be dry, with nothing greasy on it.
How it works
| Part of the mat | Size |
|---|---|
| Centre circle, where bouts start | 1 m across |
| Central wrestling area | 7 m across |
| Orange passivity zone, part of the wrestling area | 1 m wide |
| Whole wrestling circle | 9 m across |
| Protection area, outside the circle | 1.5 m wide |
- The protection area must be a different colour from the mat.
- At the Olympic Games, world and continental championships and Ranking Series events the mat is on a platform between 0.8 and 1.1 metres high.
- The singlet is the standard uniform in all the Olympic styles. It must be of smooth fabric with no rough edges.
- A wrestler who comes to the mat in the wrong singlet has one minute to change, or loses by forfeit.
- Forbidden: another country's emblem; any greasy or sticky substance on the body; coming to the mat sweating at the start of the bout or of a period; tape or bandages not approved by the competition doctor; rings, bracelets, piercings and anything else that could injure; under-wired bras.
- The hands must be bare.
- A wrestler may not lower the shoulder straps of the singlet before leaving the hall.
Tricky cases
Is the orange zone out of bounds?
No. It is part of the wrestling area. Out of bounds starts at the protection area.
What do the rules say about shoes and ear guards?
Nothing in this document. It sends the reader to the UWW Uniform Guideline, which has not been read for this page.
Why the rule exists
A sweaty or greased wrestler is harder to hold, which is an unfair advantage. The marked zones tell the wrestlers and officials where the edge is before anyone reaches it.
