What is technical superiority in wrestling?
B · Beginner · Scoring and winning · 4 of 6In freestyle wrestling a bout is stopped as soon as one wrestler leads by 10 points. That is a win by technical superiority. The referee waits for the action in progress to finish and the wrestlers to return to a neutral position before ending it.
How it works
- The margin is 10 points in freestyle wrestling. Women's wrestling uses the same 10. Greco-Roman uses 8.
- The mat chairman signals the referee when the margin is reached.
- The bout is not stopped in mid-hold. The attack or counter-attack is allowed to finish, so a wrestler who has reached the margin can still be pinned, or go on to score a fall, in the same action.
- For the tournament ranking it is worth 4 classification points to the winner, against 3 for an ordinary points win and 5 for a fall.
Tricky cases
Is the bout stopped the instant the margin is reached?
No. It ends when the wrestlers return to a neutral position, after the current action is complete.
Is technical superiority the same as a pin?
No. A fall ends the bout by holding the shoulders down. Technical superiority ends it on the score.
Why the rule exists
It ends a one-sided bout early, which protects the outclassed wrestler and saves the winner's energy for the next round.
