How a match works, in a minute
How a wrestling bout works
- Two wrestlers try to take each other down and turn each other's back towards the mat.
- Holds score 1, 2, 4 or 5 points: a takedown is worth 2, and so is turning the opponent's back towards the mat. Big throws are worth more.
- Holding the opponent's two shoulders on the mat, a fall, wins the bout at once, whatever the score.
- A 10-point lead also ends the bout early: technical superiority.
- Otherwise the wrestler with more points after two periods wins. A tie goes to the criteria: first the highest-value hold.
How long
A senior bout is two periods of three minutes with a 30-second break, six minutes in all.
Greco-Roman
The same bout, but every hold is above the belt line: no grabbing the legs and no use of your own. A lead of 8 points, not 10, ends it early.
