Why can a lifter be thrown out for opening too light?
A · Advanced · Attempts, order and the clock · 1 of 4A lifter enters a competition with an entry total. The two opening attempts, added together, cannot be less than 20 kg below it. A lifter who entered with 300 kg must open with at least 280 kg across the snatch and the clean and jerk, or be excluded from the competition.
How it works
- The entry total: the total in kilograms a lifter submits when entering.
- The rule: "The total weight of the starting attempts declared and taken in the Snatch and the Clean & Jerk cannot be less than twenty (20) kg below the verified entry total."
- The penalty: the technical controller will exclude the lifter from the competition if the rule is not kept.
- Who watches it: the jury, the referees, the technical controller and the chief marshal all have the duty to enforce it.
- Declared and taken: the rule covers the opening weights the lifter really attempts, not only the ones first written down.
Tricky cases
A lifter entered with 250 kg and wants to open at 100 kg and 125 kg. Is that allowed?
No. The openers add up to 225 kg, which is 25 kg below the entry total. They must add up to at least 230 kg.
Does it matter how the weight is split between the two lifts?
No. The rule looks at the two opening attempts added together.
A lifter opens at the right snatch weight, misses three times and then wants a light clean and jerk. Does the rule still bind?
Yes. The rule applies to the starting attempts declared and taken in both lifts.
Why the rule exists
Entry totals decide which group a lifter is placed in, and the strongest group lifts last in the best session. Without the rule a lifter could claim a big total to get into the top group and then open far below it. The link between the entry and the openers keeps the entries honest.
