How a match works, in a minute

How a weightlifting contest works

  1. Lifters compete in bodyweight categories, so people of similar size lift against each other.
  2. There are two lifts. In the snatch the bar goes from the floor to straight arms overhead in one movement. In the clean and jerk it goes to the shoulders first, then overhead.
  3. Each lifter has three attempts at each lift, and the bar only gets heavier. Three referees judge every lift: two or three white lights make a good lift.
  4. The best snatch and the best clean and jerk are added to give the total. The highest total in the category wins.

How long

A lifter has one minute from being called to start each attempt.
