What are youth, junior, senior and Masters in weightlifting?
A · Advanced · Categories and the weigh-in · 3 of 4Competitions are organised by age group as well as body weight. In the rule book read for this page, youth is 13 to 17, junior 15 to 20, under 23 is 15 to 23, senior 15 and over and Masters 35 and over. The age that counts is the one the lifter reaches in that calendar year.
How it works
| Age group | Ages |
|---|---|
| Development | Under 12 (split into under 10 and under 12) |
| Youth | 13 to 17 (split into under 15 and under 17) |
| Junior | 15 to 20 |
| Under 23 | 15 to 23 |
| Senior | 15 and over |
| Masters | 35 and over, in five-year bands |
- Birth year counts: "Age groups are based on the athlete's birth year." A lifter who turns 13 during the year lifts as an under-15 from 1 January.
- Overlap: a 16-year-old is a youth, a junior and a senior at once and may enter events for any of them.
- One group per event: when a competition combines age groups, a lifter may enter only one.
- Masters: by the lifter's age on 31 December of the year of the competition.
Tricky cases
Can a 15-year-old lift in a senior competition?
Yes. Senior is 15 and over.
A lifter is 12 on the day but turns 13 in November. Which group?
Under 15. The group follows the year of birth, so they are treated as 13 for the whole year.
In a combined junior and under-23 event, can a 19-year-old be ranked in both?
No. The lifter may enter one age group category, and chooses which.
Why the rule exists
Strength rises through the teens and twenties and falls later in life. Age groups give developing lifters and older lifters fair contests, and using the birth year means a lifter does not change group in the middle of a season.
