What happens when the ball hits the net or the antenna in volleyball?

I · Intermediate · Playing the ball and the net · 3 of 8
Checked 13 October 2026

The ball must cross the net between the two antennae, in the "crossing space". It may touch the net on the way, and a ball hit into the net may be played out of it within the team's three hits. A ball that touches an antenna or crosses outside one is out.

How it works

  • Crossing space: above the top of the net, between the antennae and their imaginary extension upwards, below the ceiling.
  • The ball may touch the net while crossing, in a rally and on the serve.
  • A ball driven into the net may be recovered, as long as the team has hits left and the same player does not hit twice in a row.
  • If the ball tears the net or brings it down, the rally is replayed.
  • A ball heading under the net is in play until it has wholly crossed the plane of the net.
  • Chasing a ball: if a team's first hit sends the ball outside the antenna into the opponents' free zone, a teammate may run round and play it back, provided it returns outside the antenna on the same side and the player does not touch the opponents' court. The opponents may not get in the way.
  • A second or third hit that crosses outside the antenna is out at once.

Tricky cases

The ball hit the top of the net and rolled over. Is it good?

Yes. The ball may touch the net while crossing it.

A teammate hit the ball into the net. Can I play it?

Yes, if your team has a hit left.

A bad pass flew outside the antenna to the other side. Is the rally over?

Not if it came from the team's first hit. A teammate may chase it and play it back outside the same antenna.

Why the rule exists

The antennae mark the edge of the court upwards, so a ball cannot be steered round the side of the net. The chase rule keeps a wild first pass alive without letting a team attack from outside.
