How many players are in a beach volleyball team, and what do they wear?
Officials' detail · Time-outs, conduct, officials and the court · 2 of 2A beach volleyball team is exactly two players, with no substitutes. One is the captain. Players are barefoot unless the referee allows otherwise, and wear the numbers 1 and 2. At FIVB events they may not be coached during a match.
How it works
- Two players, both recorded on the score sheet, both always in play.
- One is the captain, who signs the score sheet, takes the toss, requests time-outs and speaks to the referees.
- Equipment: shorts or a bathing suit. A shirt or tank-top is optional unless the tournament requires one. A hat or head covering is allowed.
- Numbers 1 and 2, on the chest or the front of the shorts, at least 10 cm high.
- At FIVB events partners wear the same colour and style.
- Barefoot, unless the first referee authorises socks or shoes.
- The referee may also allow a player, on request, to wear an undershirt and training trousers.
- Forbidden: objects that may cause injury or give an artificial advantage. Glasses and lenses are at the player's own risk.
- No outside help or coaching during a match at FIVB, world and official competitions, with exceptions for age-group events and parts of the Continental Cup.
- Players need the referees' permission to leave the playing area.
Tricky cases
Can a beach player wear shoes or socks?
Yes, if the first referee authorises it. Hot or cold sand is the usual reason.
Can players wear sunglasses?
Yes. Glasses are allowed at the player's own risk.
Is coaching ever allowed?
Yes, at some events. The ban applies to FIVB, world and official competitions, with exceptions in age-group regulations and phases of the Continental Cup.
Why the rule exists
Two players with nobody to replace or direct them is the heart of the game: the pair must solve every problem on the sand themselves.
